Incontinence is an extremely common problem in women especially those that have carried a baby. Many find the problem embarrassing and don’t talk about it or laugh it off as normal. There are many options out there to help you manage and treat your incontinence.

What is it?

Bladder symptoms such as incontinence can occur at any time throughout our lifespan, and is a very common problem especially in women. Unfortunately many women don’t seek treatment for incontinence as they just accept this as part of getting older. This does not have to be the case and many respond well to non-surgical treatments including pelvic floor strengthening.

So what are the signs of pelvic floor weakness or problems?

- leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, jump, laugh or lift
- needing to go to the toilet in a hurry and/or not making it in time
- needing to go to the toilet frequently
- difficulty in emptying your bladder and/or bowel
- a feeling of heaviness, dragging, discomfort or pulling in the vagina
- involuntary passing of wind

How can we help?

Here at Completely Aligned, our Osteopath Jaclyn is trained to perform a comprehensive assessment and examination. From that she will provide an individualised treatment plan to assist you managing your incontinence.

The initial 60 minute assessment with Jaclyn will include questioning of past medical, surgical and obstetric history, medications and current symptoms. The patient will be asked to fill in a diary noting their bladder and bowel habits/voids, and fluid and/or dietary intake. A physical examination will be performed and may include abdominal, vaginal and pelvic floor examination (internal/vaginal examination will only be performed with patient consent)

Treatment program

Once we know the exact type and cause of your bladder symptoms, a treatment plan is made. Usually a pelvic floor muscle strengthening program is prescribed, modification may be made to fluid intake levels including caffeine reduction if excessive, we discuss good bladder and bowel habits while providing tips on improving these, and pelvic floor safe exercises will also be discussed. Our exercise physiologist will assist you at this point with appropriate exercise supervision and instruction.

Follow up visits are recommended to review and modify the plan as required.
