Recovering from an injury doesn’t stop after your first osteopathic treatment—it’s an ongoing journey, and Gemma’s here in Camden to guide you through it. With expertise in rehabilitation, Gemma works with our patients to create practical, individualised recovery plans that go well beyond managing symptoms. Whether you’re dealing with a sports injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply aiming to improve movement, Gemma’s approach to rehab is all about building strength, stability, and confidence.
Read on to learn how rehab with Gemma can make a real difference in your recovery journey!
Q1: Gemma, how is a REHAB appointment with you different from a typical osteo session?
Gemma: In rehab sessions, we begin with a detailed case history, similar to an osteo appointment, but then dive deeper into identifying any underlying factors contributing to your issue. I use functional movement assessments to see how your body handles everyday activities, which helps pinpoint areas that need attention. This approach allows me to design a personalised exercise plan tailored to your goals, whether it’s home-based or gym-based, and paced to fit your lifestyle.
Q2: How does REHAB help prevent re-injury?
Gemma: Rehabilitation systematically builds tissue strength and resilience, helping prevent re-injury. Injuries often happen when tissues are overloaded too suddenly. Through controlled exercises, we gradually increase the load on muscles, tendons, and ligaments, allowing them to adapt and strengthen over time. This process builds resilience, while balanced strength exercises and correcting compensatory patterns further support injury prevention.
Q3: Who benefits most from REHAB?
Gemma: Anyone experiencing pain or discomfort, no matter how minor or major the issue, can benefit from rehab. Rehab is a powerful tool for strengthening and building resilience. It can help everyone from athletes recovering from injuries to those simply looking to stay active with their families, play sports, or garden without discomfort. Rehab meets people where they are and helps them reach their unique goals.
Q4: How do you select the right exercises for each patient’s recovery?
Gemma: I work with each patient to choose exercises that match their experience, lifestyle, and goals. Rehab should feel approachable and enjoyable—never intimidating. It’s an ongoing process, so I’ll adjust exercises as we go along to best support recovery and keep the program effective and engaging.
Q5: What can patients expect in a REHAB session with you? Will it be challenging?
Gemma: Rehab is both challenging and achievable. We’ll guide your body through new movements that encourage positive change. Like a good workout, you might feel a bit sore, but that’s normal and a sign of progress. Throughout each session, I monitor your responses to keep exercises challenging yet manageable and help you understand what “healthy” soreness feels like.
Q6: How long does it typically take to see results?
Gemma: Initial improvements, like reduced pain or increased mobility, are often noticeable within 2 to 4 weeks. More significant gains in strength and stability come after 6 to 12 weeks. More complex injuries may take longer, but flexibility in the program ensures steady progress towards long-term recovery.
Q7: Where do you hold rehab appointments?
Gemma: I hold initial rehab sessions at our Camden clinic, where we assess each patient’s needs and goals. From there, we decide together whether a gym-based setting or a home-based program will be the best fit. I’m excited to soon start offering sessions in the gym, adding more options to help patients reach their goals.
Q8: How can people learn more about your approach to rehab?
Gemma: Patients can reach out to me directly at [email protected] to discuss if rehab is the right approach for their needs, or book an appointment online. I’m here to support everyone on their journey to a stronger, healthier, and more resilient body.
Q9: And finally, what are you currently training for?
Gemma: I’m training for a half marathon at the end of the month, along with strength training at the gym. It keeps me motivated and lets me apply the same principles I use with patients to my own fitness journey!
